2.4. Health facilities in Central Province:

Being a relatively large province with remarkable climatic and geographic diversity, the Central Province has a divergent population subjected to a wide spectrum of ailments requiring dynamism in the provision of healthcare services. High population density in the region has intensified this challenge with overcrowded health institutions badly demanding for improved infrastructure and efficient planning.

2.4.1. Curative healthcare facilities:

The network of curative care institutions ranges from sophisticated Teaching Hospitals with specialized consultative services to small Primary Medical Care Units, which provide only out patient services. The distinction between hospitals is basically made on the size and the range of facilities. There are three levels of curative care institutions:

1. Primary Care Institutions:
   • Primary Medical Care Units (PMCU)
   • Divisional Hospitals (DH)
2. Secondary Care Institutions:
   • Base Hospitals (BH)
   • General Hospitals (GH)
3. Tertiary Care Institutions:
   • Teaching Hospitals (TH)
   • National Hospitals (NH)
4. Special Units (SpU)

2.4.2. Preventive health facilities:

Preventive care is provided through a well organized system of MOH offices, which are further devided into PHI (Plublic Health Inspector) and PHM (Public Health Midwife) areas:
